Impact Proof

My project Impact proof will prevent bird deaths caused by window collisions. During the day we may see clearly outside the window, but what birds see is a reflection of endless sky. I recently attempted to save a kestrel after she hit translucent plexiglas at a bus station. Although the kestrel did not survive the trauma, I was inspired find creative ways to  prevent other birds a similar fate and educate the public about my experience.  Impact Proof is an installation of vinyl decals cut in the silhouettes of birds. I will apply the decals to windows around downtown and at the bus stop where I discovered the kestrel. They will also be installed at Window Unit, a new downtown apartment gallery over the summer.

On Saturday May 19 during the Urban Culture Project’s Open Studios, Sharon Goff, President of the Friends of the Lakeside Nature Center, will share a family friendly presentation on what to do if you find animals in your back yard and share specimens of other birds of prey in my pARTnership place studio from 11-12. I have also created a porcelain replica of the injured kestrel that will be available for purchase through a silent auction with 50% of the proceeds gifted to the Nature Center.
