Career Services and I would like to thank everyone who attended the opening reception of ‘Construction In Structure’, First Friday, March 2, at City Arts Project as well as those whose contributions made the first Access Alumni Event a success. The exhibition is on view through April 21st. I appreciate the freedom I have had in my position at KCAI to make programing like this available to students.

‘Construction In Structure’ Opening at City Arts Project March 2

25 Feb

KCAI Career Services presents Alumni Access Events’ exhibition Construction In Structure at City Arts Project. Alumni Access Events: connecting students to alumni, is one of the many new programs coming out of the KCAI Career Services Department since I joined the team. For our first event, career services sent a call to alumni asking if they would be interested in mentoring students through a juried exhibition. Matt Bollinger (’03 painting), Erika Hanson (’06 fiber), Justin Gainan (’04 fiber), Amelia Ishmael (’04 photo new media, ’09 art history), and Jason Lips (’02 ceramics) made selections based off submitted work as well as students they wanted to meet in a series of studio visits before the exhibition.

Out of over 65 applications, 18 were selected. They include: Andrew Ordonez (’13 painting), Ashley Ariel Proski (’13 photo), Ashley Lugo (’12 fiber), Ben Harle (’12 ceramics and art history), Bradley Kyle Lewis (’12 painting and art history), Caranne Camerena (’12 painting), Emily Connell (’12 ceramics), Frederick Vorder-Bruegge (’13 painting), Hank Hafkemeyer (’12 ceramics), Julian Chams (’12 painting), Julian Stropes (’14 painting), Katy McRoberts (’12 fiber and CASL), Lauren Sobchak (’13 fiber and CASL), Madeline Gallucci (’12 printmaking), Maret Miller (’13 ceramics), Marianne Laury (’12 sculpture and CASL), Molly Ryan (’13 sculpture) and Zachary Miley (’13 illustration).

Please join us for the opening reception at City Arts Project, 2015 Campbell St, First Friday, March 2 from 6-9pm. The exhibition continues through April 21.

KCAI Career Services Online Presence Workshop

16 Nov

On November 11th, I conducted my first professional development workshop for KCAI students. The focus was on professional visibility online. We covered the best ways to research and reach out to different audiences. Google email etiquette and organization. Personal privacy when using social media, and how other alumni use social media. Most importantly linking it all to their portfolio on a blog or website. It’s critical that all art students have an online portfolio started before they graduate, and utilize the surge of  free web tools to maximize their presence in the art world. Next semester I plan to continue sharing insight about WordPress by visiting different departments during their Professional Practice time in studio.
